Wonderful Halos Mandarin Oranges

Get a dose of immunity-boosting vitamin C with this great deal on Wonderful Halos Oranges at Safeway.

In the San Joaquin Valley of California, there’s a citrus grove that stretches as far as the eye can see. It’s here that Halos mandarins are grown. Halos are a sweet, delicious snack loved by both kids and grown-ups alike.

The difference between a clementine and a mandarin orange?

Mandarins are an ancient fruit – among the original ancestors of all other types of citrus, according to a review in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture in 2017.

Mandarins distinguish themselves from oranges by having a deeper-colored skin that is looser and easier to peel; the segments, too, tend to separate more readily than those of an orange.

Clementines are a variety of mandarin oranges, constituting the smallest member of the family. While not all mandarin oranges are seedless, clementines are, adding to the ease of eating them. Clementines tend to have softer membranes and a slightly sweeter taste than other mandarins.

However you want to call it – Wonderful calls them mandarins, Safeway calls them clementines – they are on sale for a great price this week!  Look for the NEW gold packaging, rather than the iconic blue packaging you may be accustomed to.

Mandarins can be used interchangeably in recipes that call for oranges.  In fact, mandarins are sweeter than traditional navel oranges, so they add a delicious sweetness to any recipe where they are used.  Perfect for adding to salads, desserts, making a fresh citrus salsa and more!

  1. Yes, these are quite good – picked up a bag yesterday. And, here’s another Citrus deal at Safeway this week: 2 pound bag of Sunkist Tangelos for $2.49; which paired with the recent $2.00/2 Sunkist Citrus coupon (this was a printable on Coupons.com a while back, plus there was Just4U Digital equivalent), meaning two bags of tangelos for a total of $3.98 ($1.49 a bag).
