Organic Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Hershey’s Chocolate Bars
Hershey’s is redefining the candy aisle with “better-for-you candy” options with the launch of its new Organic Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Organic Hershey’s Chocolate Bars and new low sugar and no sugar varieties as well!
Now available at Safeway Reese’s is offering new Organic Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in both dark and milk chocolate varieties. While the brand promises that “no taste [is] sacrificed” with this different formulation. We found it to be quite different – but not in a bad way.
The “certified USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, and Rainforest Alliance Certified” candy is being sold in two-cup, 1.4-ounce packs with green fringe on both ends of the otherwise standard orange packaging.
“We’re continuing to expand our product line so there is a Reese’s cup option for nearly everyone,” Eric Newton, brand manager for Reese’s Organic, said in the press release. “When consumers go down the candy aisle or shop online, we want everyone to have an option to choose from, and we aren’t settling until everyone can enjoy a Reese’s product.”
Hershey says this launch makes Reese’s “the first mass chocolate brand to offer an organic option”—though it should be noted that Hershey didn’t stop there. The chocolate giant is also rolling out organic versions of their signature milk chocolate and special dark chocolate bars in 1.55-ounce packs, which are also now available at Safeway.
And organic isn’t the only dietary trend Hershey is investing in. The company announced it had set its sights on leading the “better-for-you” chocolate category—which, beyond “portion-controlled choices,” Hershey said would include “more reduced sugar, organic and plant-based alternatives.” The company then announced they had made an investment in Bonumose, billed as “a start-up company with breakthrough innovations in plant-based food ingredients, including rare and natural sugars.”
Safeway also carries the new organic Hershey share size candy in dark and milk chocolate as well as the new Reese’s Zero Sugar Candy. It’s also called Reese’s Sugar Free. The zero sugar candy is made with sugar alcohols (Lactitol and maltitol – sugar substitutes), which are slowly metabolized carbohydrates that generally cause only a small rise in blood glucose levels

Review of Organic Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Because peanut butter cups are my favorite candy, I gave the organic Reese’s peanut butter cups a try. In my opinion, and I consider myself to have a discerning pallet, the organic Reese’s is not the same as the original. It has thicker chocolate than the traditional Reese’s cups and the peanut butter filling is extra smooth and creamy.
It has a delicious creamy peanut butter flavor – but it is subtle and is not the primary flavor focus of the organic cups. I tasted a more pronounced chocolate flavor and subtle creamy peanut butter flavor than the original peanut butter cups.
I would buy it again because I like the organic ingredients.
The organic Hershey’s Bars do taste just like the original bars. Obviously, there are not as many ingredients to formulate/manipulate in the traditional chocolate as there are in the peanut butter cups, so this makes sense to me.
