Grilled Greek Pita Burger

Grilled Greek Pita Burger

Grilled Greek Pita Burger

Mix up your weekend grilling by trying a new burger recipe.  Skip the traditional American burger and try a Greek Pita Burger.    This particular recipe is like a burger and a salad stuffed in a pita. You can use ground beef, or ground lamb for this recipe and combine with fresh herbs, red onions, Kalamata olives, spinach and tomatoes served inside a pita bread – and you will get amazing reviews from your family.

We went to Greece a few summers back and by the end of the trip my kids just wanted a burger, but all the restaurants had Greek-style burgers, otherwise known as bifteki, filled with chopped onions and fresh herbs.

They were so delicious, but not quite the typical American burgers they were used to eating.  They ate them anyway and asked me to recreate them at home.  This is a close recipe to what we tried in Greece, so I hope you enjoy it!

Perfect for the 93% lean ground been on sale for just $3.97/lb. at Safeway right now.  Great price for lean ground beef!

Directions

1. Heat grill to medium (375º-425º) and carefully oil the grates.

2. In a bowl, add lamb, oregano, garlic, salt and pepper. Gently combine, being careful not to over mix. Divide and shape into four equal-size patties. Using your thumb, create a dent in the center of each patty, which allows for more even cooking.

3. Grill 3-4 minutes each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 160º. During the last 2 minutes, add pitas to the grill and cook for 1 minute on each side. Remove and set aside. Remove burgers from grill, tent with aluminum foil and let rest for 5 minutes.

4. In a small bowl, combine salad ingredients and lightly toss. To assemble, add a small handful of salad to the pita, then add the burger.
