Vidalia onions are on sale for just $.99/lb. at Safeway. Now is a great time to stock up on sweet onions. Sweet onions make a fabulous French onion dip, or caramelized onion dip.
Combine onions with butter, olive oil, grated garlic and fresh thyme in a saute pan until the onions are soft and caramelized – this takes about 30 to 40 minutes.
Combine with sour cream, quark or Greek yogurt and lemon juice and zest for a touch of brightness and serve. The dip is out of this world delicious!
The healthier option is quark because it uses ultrafiltered milk so there is more protein per cup and fewer sugars.
Let’s talk about the onions for a moment. What makes a Vidalia onion special?
All Vidalias are sweet onions, but not all sweet onions are Vidalias. There are several qualifications an onion must meet to be a Vidalia onion.
Vidalia onions are grown in Georgia and have a sweet, mild flavor profile that is an essential ingredient for a wide range of dishes including salads, dressings and even desserts.
Vidalia onions are Georgia’s official state vegetable, grown on 12,000 acres annually and represent about 40 percent of the sweet onion market.
