How to Keep Sliced Apples from Turning Brown

It’s finally apple season, which means we can expect to see HOT deals on apples over the next few months!  Even now Safeway has granny smith, golden delicious and red delicious apples on sale for just $.99/lb. We buy apples all year round, but we love to get fresh apples in October because they are extra crunchy and fresh!  I slice apples every day to put into my kiddos lunch boxes.  It’s a quick, easy and non-messy snack! Here are a few tips for keeping sliced apples fresh for kids lunches.

The main ingredient to preserving apples and keeping them from oxidizing is simple – citric acid.  In its very basic, natural form it is found in lemons, limes, oranges, pineapple and other citrus fruits.  It is also dehydrated and crystalized for a shelf-stable preservative and, in a variety of forms, is perfect for keeping sliced apples ready for lunch or an easy snack!

Two Ways To Keep Apples From Browning

1) Citrus Fruit Juice: lemon juice is our family’s favorite as we love the flavor combo of tart lemon and sweet apple.  But, if your children don’t like lemons, any fresh citrus fruit juice will work.  You can either sprinkle fresh citrus juice directly over the apples, or you can add lemon juice to a bowl with a cup of water and add the apples.  Soak the apples for a few minutes and then store in a food storage container or bag until ready to eat.

2. Honey: soak your apples, pears, or other fruit you don’t want to brown for a few minutes in a mixture of 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 cup of water. Your fruit will stay fresh and bright for up to 8 hours, perfect if you need to slice now and serve later.
