Greek Chicken Gyros Recipe With Tzatziki Sauce

Greek Chicken Gyros

Greek Chicken Gyros Recipe

Tender, juicy chicken breasts full of delicious flavor including lemon, oregano, and garlic, grilled and rolled into a toasted pita for a perfect Greek Chicken Gyros dinner the whole family will love.

One of my family’s favorite meals is Greek Chicken Gyros.  The grilled chicken is incredibly flavorful and juicy from the marinade, the vegetables are crisp and have a delicious Greek flavor from the oregano and olive oil.

If you’ve never had gyros, it’s made of rotisserie seasoned meat, served in pita bread, often served with fries, tzatziki sauce, fresh tomatoes, and onions.  Gyros is traditionally made from pork or beef, sometimes from chicken, and can be served inside the pita as a sandwich or as a plate with the toppings on the side.

Ingredients in Chicken Gyros

  • boneless, skinless chicken (breasts or thighs)
  • pita bread
  • red wine vinegar
  • Plain Greek Yogurt
  • Garlic
  • Olive Oil
  • Oregano
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Cherry Tomatoes
  • English Cucumber
  • Red Onion
  • Feta Cheese

The marinade for the chicken gyros is what makes this dish.  You start with Greek yogurt, add lemon, red wine vinegar, garlic, olive oil, and oregano.  It’s amazing what a bit of yogurt can do to chicken.

The acid in the yogurt breaks down the fibers so it not only softens the chicken but also helps the marinade really infuse into the flesh. PLUS the yogurt stays slathered on the chicken when you cook it,  so you have an extra flavor that lasts through the grilling.

Take advantage of the hot sales on boneless chicken breasts Greek Yogurt to make these Chicken Gyros sandwiches for dinner this week.  If you are watching your carbs, skip the pita and just serve the chicken gyros over the Greek Salad.

Chicken Gyros is perfect for meal prep.  Make a large batch of chicken and Greek salad and portion it out into individual glass containers.  Skip the dressing on the salad to make it last a few days and you can prepare the dressing in a little food storage container to take with you and add to the gyros right before you eat it.

NOTE – I forgot to add the garlic in the video and that’s totally essential in the recipe, so don’t leave it out.
