Homemade Play Dough Recipe
If you have little ones at home, keeping them entertained for days on end can be a challenge when you can’t leave the house. Make homemade play dough to pass the time and give the kids something to entertain them for hours.
Let them use your cookie cutters and tools in the kitchen to create fun shapes, add texture and play. Homemade playdough is easy to make and can be made with simple ingredients like flour, salt, water and cream of tartar that you likely have on hand in your pantry and spice cabinet. Add food coloring to make different colors of playdough and let the creativity flow!
The recipe below yields 1 cup of play dough, so if you want multiple colors, you can divide the dough into separate saucepans to make various colors of dough.

Ingredients for Homemade Play Dough
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 cup of salt
- 1/4 cup McCormick® Cream of Tartar
- 2 cups of water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- McCormick® Assorted Food Colors & Egg Dye
- Wax paper
How to Make Play Dough
Mix flour, salt, and cream of tartar in a medium saucepan. Add water and oil; mix well. Add 20 drops of desired food color.
Cook about 5 minutes on medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture holds together.
Remove from heat. Scrape dough onto wax paper to cool. Knead slightly until dough is smooth.
How to Store Play Dough
Store the play dough in an airtight container. It may be kept for 2 to 4 weeks.
