Sweet & Smokey BBQ Beans

Baked Beans are quintessential BBQ food.  With Labor Day just around the corner, it’s time to gather your recipes for an end-of-summer bash.  Celebrate the kids going back to school, the fall colors starting in Colorado and slightly cooler temperatures on the way.  I worked with Kuner’s Foods to test their Sweet & Smokey BBQ Beans recipe, and let me tell you that this is a wonderful recipe to serve at any BBQ or gathering!

To be honest, I’ve never been a fan of the pre-made canned baked beans.  They are way too sweet for my taste and I really like to control the ingredients that I consume and that I serve my family.  In this recipe, you are adding all-natural, wholesome ingredients that allow you to actually taste the tanginess of the apple cider vinegar, the sweetness of the brown sugar and molasses and the smokiness of the bacon in every bite of this dish.

I served these Sweet & Smokey BBQ Beans at dinner last night as a side to a grilled beef tri-tip roast and the entire skillet was devoured, leaving no leftovers for lunch. Next time I will definitely make a double batch because I’m sure these taste even better the next day.  Truth be told, I was shocked that my 6-year-old ate the baked beans, but since she helped in the preparation and saw the whole dish come together, she was more apt to eat.  You can serve hot or at room temperature, both ways taste great!

This is the perfect dish to make in your cast iron skillet and take directly from stove to table!  First, you’ll create the sauce by using the bacon drippings and sauteing the onion and garlic.  You’ll add all the sauce ingredients to the pan, bring to a boil, and eventually add the beans.  This is what the beans look like when you just add them to the sauce.  I took a taste at this point and got a heavy flavor of apple cider vinegar and garlic.  You’ll need to let the beans simmer for about 10 minutes in the sauce to absorb all the flavors and get the thick consistency for the sauce.

Once the beans have simmered in the sauce for about 10 – 15 minutes, the sauce thickens and flavors the beans all the way through.  I added the bacon to the last 5 minutes of cooking because I like to have a little crunch in my beans.  If you don’t like the crunch of the bacon, you can always add it when you add the beans and it will be as soft as the beans, but still have that recognizable bacon flavor.
