Time to Give Back with Turkey Bucks

Are you loving all these great deals we are finding for you at Safeway every week?  It sure is fun – but we also have to take a moment to consider those less fortunate who don’t have $100 to spend to get a free turkey at Safeway.

Did you know?

  • 12.9% of people ( nearly 1 in 7) in Colorado live in poverty. (quickfact.census.gov)
  • 18.1% of Colorado children live in poverty and 8%  are living in extreme poverty. (coloradokids.org – 2014)
  • 39% of Colorado children live in households with incomes less than 200% of poverty. (coloradokids.org – 2014)
  • Poverty in Colorado has increased since 2001.
  • The total poverty rate in Colorado increased from 9.6% in 2001 to 12.9% in 2012.
  • Furthermore, Colorado’s child poverty rate increased from 12.2% in 2001 to 18.1% in 2012.
  • 7% of Colorado seniors live below 100% of poverty and 28% live below 200% of poverty.

Safeway has a new program called Turkey Bucks where they collect your donations and give them to local food pantries to help feed hungry families.  It’s super easy, simply grab a turkey buck in $1, $5 or $10 increments at the register.  I asked Safeway for a list of the organizations that benefit from this program and here is the list.  Safeway has partnered with these awesome organizations to receive the donations from the Turkey Bucks Program:
