Tips for Decorating Sugar Cookies

There are no rules for decorating cookies.  Let your imagination go wild and let the icing flow.  A few tips for a successful cookie decorating party include:

Set out paper plates for everyone to use for their personal cookie decorating station. This makes clean up easy!

Have plenty of knives available for spreading the frosting and mixing colors.

Set ground rules that no finger-licking or knife licking allowed 😉

Have a roll of paper towels on hand for cleaning frosted fingers.

For fine details and designs, consider purchasing icing tips and couplers that you can place on the icing tubes.

If you have holiday-themed cookie cutters, you can actually cut shapes into the sugar cookies.  Just go slow to avoid breaking the cookie.

Have fun!

Tools needed for decorating sugar cookies

The DIY decorating kits come with the cookies, icing tubes, and sprinkles, but if you want to get really creative, you can pick up icing tips and couplers in the Safeway baking aisle.

You’ll find several options available for cookie and cupcake tips that you can add to the icing tubes for drawing fine lines and adding details to the cookies.

One thing my kids asked for that I wish I had purchased was black gel icing so they could draw fine lines like eyes and buttons for snowmen – so that may be something to consider if you plan to decorate cookies.

I also had red hots on hand as accents for the cookies.

Tips for Decorating Cupcakes

The icing tubes make decorating cupcakes really easy.  For pretty designs on the cupcakes, I highly suggest picking up the icing tubes in the baking aisle.  You can create swirls, thick tubes, flowers, and more.

To create a multicolor swirl on the cupcakes – you can squeeze two icing tubes into one tip and get creative with making beautiful cupcake designs.

Add a marshmallow to create a snowman.

Use M&M’s or red hots as a garnish in addition to the provided sprinkles.

Fun for the whole family – these cookie and cupcake decorating kits will help you create lifelong memories, bring out your inner Martha Stewart, and have so much fun during the holiday season!

The Grich was by far the most popular design to mimic, followed by Santa and Christmas trees.  These kids were really creative!

We used cookie cutters to cut snowflake shapes into the sugar cookies.  My kids like cutting the cookies because they enjoyed eating the scraps.

One tip for decorating the chocolate chip cookies – turn the cookie over so you have a flat surface with which to work.  It makes it easier to spread the frosting and decorate.
