How To Make Homemade Black Bean Burgers

  • Heat grill or grill pan to medium (375º-425º). Lightly oil grates with coconut oil.
  • In a bowl, add black beans. Press beans against the bowl with a fork until most of the beans are slightly mashed. Beans should be thick and pasty.
  • Add egg, oats, garlic, scallions, salt and pepper flakes. Mix together with a fork until fully combined.
  • Let the mixture rest for 10-15 minutes.
  • Divide and shape into 4 equal-size patties.
  • Grill for about 4 minutes on each side.
  • Remove from grill and assemble into burgers, first a slice of tomato, red onion, black bean burger, roasted red pepper, avocado, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze.

If you do not have balsamic glaze on hand, you can make your own by heating balsamic vinegar in a saucepan over medium heat for about 20 minutes until the vinegar reduces in half.  The resulting thick liquid is the balsamic glaze.  it makes a delicious topping for burgers, a Caprese salad and more!
