Open Nature Broccoli Crust Pizza
Gluten-free shoppers rejoice! Safeway has introduced three NEW Open Nature Broccoli Crust Pizzas as a new innovation in the frozen pizza aisle.
Joining the cauliflower crust pizza varieties, there are now seven total gluten-free pizzas available under the Open Nature brand.
The Open Nature Broccoli Crust Pizzas are available in Tomato, Garlic & Basil, Veggie or Chicken & Kale pizza flavors.
Similar to the cauliflower crust pizzas, these specialty pizzas are slightly smaller the Open Nature traditional wheat flour pizzas, but they can still be shared by two people and no one will be left hungry.
The crust is made from broccoli and shredded cheddar cheese along with rice flour. The result is a crispy, flavorful crust and delicious pizza with a flavor profile driven by its toppings rather than the crust.
Similar to all Open Nature products, you’ll find the ingredients are simple, natural, and free from artificial flavors, and colors so you can feel good about serving it to your family.
Review of Broccoli Crust Pizza
My family and I tried both the tomato, garlic basil, and the chicken and kale pizzas and we were split 3 to 2 on the tomato, garlic basil pizza vs. the kale and chicken pizza. Both are delicious, but I’m a traditionalist when it comes to pizza and I prefer a red sauce.
The crust was crispy, because of the combination of rice flour and cheddar cheese. A crisp crust makes or breaks a pizza because frankly, no one likes a soggy pizza crust.
A trick for keeping the crust crispy – cook only one pizza at a time and use a metal baking sheet. I’ve found pizza stones don’t crisp the broccoli or cauliflower crusts as well as the metal tray.
The tomato, garlic, and basil pizza was flavorful, and honestly one would never know it’s made with broccoli. You don’t taste broccoli in the pizza, rather you taste a crisp pizza crust with a nice balance of tomatoes, sauce, and garlic.
The chicken and kale pizza with white sauce is unique and incredibly flavorful on its own. It’s made with a creamy and luscious creme fraiche sauce over a broccoli cheddar crust, topped with chopped kale, white meat chicken, asiago, parmesan, and romano cheeses. It had a strong kale flavor, so be prepared for a mouthful of cheesy garlicky kale at first bite.
Overall we enjoyed both varieties and look forward to trying the veggie pizza when it becomes available.
