Ordering Prepared Thanksgiving Dinner To-Go

The prepared holiday meals are available throughout the months of November and December.

As a result, the meals must be ordered ahead of time, so you can stop by your local store deli, call 1-888-358-7328 or visit Safeway.com/orderahead and click on Holiday Meals to place your order.

While you can order ahead online, you will still need to stop into your local store to pick up the meal from the deli.

Cooking Instructions for Prepared Thanksgiving Meals

Safeway recently sent me the prepared holiday ham meal to create a video to feature the complete meal.   Hence, below are my tips and tricks for serving a prepared holiday meal.

Because the sides were completely frozen and needed 2-3 days to thaw in the refrigerator, you’ll need to plan ahead.

  • The Smithfield Spiral Sliced ham is fully cooked and just needs to be glazed and heated.  Hence, allow for 1.5 hours for the ham to cook at 400°.
  • The scalloped potatoes need a casserole dish, therefore, I used an 11″ x 7″ baking dish and baked them covered for 40 minutes at 350°
  • Because the green bean casserole does not come with fried onions, you will need to purchase them separately.  I used a 10″ x 7″ baking dish.  Cook uncovered for 30 minutes at 350°.
  • Cook the mashed sweet potatoes in the microwave for 3 minutes, uncovered.  I used an oval baking dish (10″ x 7″).
  • Warm the mashed potatoes in the microwave for 3 minutes, with the plastic wrap vented.
  • Heat the stuffing in the microwave for 1 minute, or in the oven for 25 minutes at 350°.
  • The spiced apples are cooked in the microwave for 2-3 minutes.  Therefore, any microwave bowl will work here.
  • Conversely, the cranberry sauce does not need to be cooked, just served in a pretty bowl.
  • Finally, the gravy can be cooked in the microwave or on the stovetop (I would choose the stovetop to free up the microwave for the side dishes).

All-in-all, we were impressed with the flavor of the meal and ease of preparation.  Indeed, I feel if you know these cooking times, the size of baking dishes needed, and make a plan ahead of time, it will make your holiday celebration go smoothly and no one has to know it was a fully purchased prepared meal they enjoyed.

  1. My son bought me a ham dinner for Thanksgiving from Safeway. He lives in Renton I live in Sequim.
I was to pick it up at 10 am. I went there they didn’t have one for me they said. I called my son. He said the manager took the order. They still couldn’t find it. They wanted a receipt so I called my son back and he said he might be able to find it on his credit card statement. While he was searching for that they said they found it. But no it was for someone else. Meanwhile, I was getting pretty embarrassed by now as they were waiting on other customers in between trying to help me. It took me an hour to finally get my dinner and get home just in time for my sweet potato pies to come out of the oven.
I didn’t say anything to my son about the dinner since I didn’t want to hurt his feelings. It was such a nice thing for him to do and I know it cost a lot of money. BUT IT WAS THE WORST DINNER I’VE EVER HAD!
The only good part was the ham and rolls. The scalloped potatoes had no flavor at all, They consisted of potatoes and a bland white sauce that had no milk flavor or any flavor, Not even a piece of onion or bits of ham or bacon or seasoning of any kind. The bean casserole was just as bad, Beans, and that same bland white sauce. That is not a casserole in my book. Then mashed sweet potatoes plain nothing added and the spiced apples had no spice and not even a crumble something on top.
I don’t usually complain and never send my plate back at a restaurant but I must say I would have been very embarrassed to serve that meal to anyone. I expected way better from Safeway.

  2. I ordered a Christmas ham dinner and it was absolutely excellent. Everything turned out fine. I’m not sure how many was supposed to feed we had 8 people and we still have leftovers. Did have our own mashed potatoes just because we had to use some up.

  3. Couldn’t someone have given me instructions on how to finish cooking the Turkey? Can you PLEASE
    e-mail them to me.
Picked up our Turkey Dinner yesterday and there weren’t any instructions included.
Was online for quite some time waiting my turn, spent even more time while it was checked out and was finally told to call the 888 number.
Spent even more time and finally told he would call the store for me to get instructions.
Instead we called the store and were not given complete instructions and had to call back. Both times had long waits for them to answer.

    1. Hi Debbie – I would bring it to room temp for about 20 minutes while preheating the oven to 325 degrees. Cook for 1 hour until heated through. The meals are cooked, just need to be reheated. Hope this helps.

  4. Ordered Prime rib dinner for 89.99 on December 9,received confirmation my meal would be available for pick-up at 10 am on the 23. I received a call this morning the 22nd that the Safeway I was secluded to pick-up at did not have Prime rib dinners available. Discussed with the very pleasant young women he than talked to people in the meat department and was told if I would like a prime rib they would make me a deal but I would probably need to pick it up today. The deal was to get a reasonable price I needed to purchase a 7 bone roast – over kill for my family. Last Year I screwed up not ordering early enough – this Year Safeway screwed up, did not even try to make good on their mess-up – will shop else where 2021.

Safeway employees are great – policies not so much.

    1. Hi Teresa – I’m sorry to hear about your experience – I’m certain Safeway will fix it – can you tell me which store you shopped at so I can pass it along to my contact at corporate?

  6. We had the premade Thanksgiving dinner a few years ago and made the mistake of buying extra sides because we wanted leftovers. When they say it is for 6-8 people, but we are a family of 5, please believe that the amount of the sides is perfect. This year we ordered the full turkey dinner and the only extra sides we are buying is the vegetables. You might want to add gravy if they sell it on the side, or make more yourself… because our family really likes to saturate their turkey and mashed potatoes. It’s worth the $70! Turkey dinner, turkey sandwiches, turkey noodle casserole, turkey soup, turkey salad.. trust me! This can feed your family for a week.

      1. The turkey’s are precooked to perfection and then refroze and sent to the Safeway stores.
Our Safeway stores slowly thaw them ahead of time in the coolers (couple days).
If yours was still frozen…you should have simply finished thawing it out if you had time before you planned on eating it.
I’d imagine since they are already cooked you could have just heated it in the oven to thaw and warm up.

        Mine was great!
The entire meal was quality…all I did was heat up some quality organic sweet corn to add to it as I like corn with my mashed spuds & gravy.

For my preferences…I ran short on stuffing and gravy so I am buying extra today when I pick up one of two turkey dinners I ordered.
I’ll pick up the second turkey dinner Christmas Eve or the day before.
They are already thawed and last a long time in the refrig.

I wished they did this all year around instead of just twice a year…I’d buy one at least once a month…at least.

        1. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I’m sure others will appreciate it as well. So glad you enjoyed the meal! Happy Holidays!

        1. Hi Joseph – I’m sorry about your experience. That is extremely rare and unexpected. Can you please share the location where you purchased your turkey meal so we can pass the feedback along to the store manager? Thank you.

  7. I love my Safeway store & its employees are kind & knowledge, but in the evening hours , when deli IS STILL OPEN.
it is IMPOSSIBLE to find a deli employee! I usually have to go all the way to the registers to ask if anyone is avail if deli is open, & they have to ask customer service! All the while I know it’s open. Just no one avail… also can’t get anyone to answer phone after numerous attempts.
