Sheet Pan Salmon Cheesesteak

Salmon Cheesesteak

Perfectly seasoned salmon is paired with oven-roasted peppers, onions and mushrooms and nestled inside a buttery toasted hoagie roll topped with gooey melted provolone in this salmon cheesesteak sandwich.

Salmon Pilly or Salmon Cheesesteak Sandwich may not be the first thing you think of when you imagine a Philly sandwich, BUT let me tell you the combination of roasted peppers, onions, and mushrooms combined with an oven-roasted salmon, topped with melted provolone and served on a butter toasted bun, is AMAZING!

Obviously, a Philly Cheesesteak is made with steak, but it doesn’t have to be!  You can make a cheesesteak sandwich with salmon and increase the nutrition and flavor with tender oven-roasted salmon.   This is a meal on regular rotation at our house because the kids love salmon and they love cheesesteak sandwiches.

I have one member of my household who does not eat steak but loves seafood, so on Philly Cheesesteak nights, I’ll make both steak and salmon Philly’s!  It’s really no extra work because you have to slice the veggies anyway – and this salmon recipe is cooked in the oven on a sheet pan, so it’s super easy to make and assemble!

Ingredients in Salmon Philly Cheesesteak

  • Salmon – You can use farmed or wild salmon.  The wild salmon cooks faster because it’s thinner, so you need to watch it and remove it from the oven potentially before the veggies so that it doesn’t dry out.
  • O Organics Steak Seasoning – I just discovered this seasoning blend at Safeway and we love it!  It’s got or use your favorite steak seasoning mix (Grill Mates, Kinders, etc)
  • Red and green bell pepper, sliced peppers are a must in a cheesesteak sandwich.  They get sweet and slightly caramelized when roasted in the oven.
  • Sliced mushrooms add a delicious umami flavor and punch up the nutrition of the sandwiches
  • Olive oil – for tossing the veggies before roasting and for brushing on the salmon so that the steak seasoning mix sticks
  • Provolone cheese slices – the glue that ties the sandwich together – you could also use pepper jack cheese here for an extra kick.  In fact, I highly recommend it!
  • Toasted hoagie rolls –  these are buttered and toasted in the oven for a perfect crunchy exterior, buttery toasted and soft interior for a perfect cheesesteak sandwich every time

How to Make a Salmon Cheesesteak Sandwich

Preheat the oven to 425° F.

Place the sliced peppers, onions, and mushrooms on a sheet pan covered in foil or parchment paper for easier cleanup.

Place the salmon on the sheet pan, skin side down.  Drizzle everything with olive oil and season with your favorite steak seasoning.

Roast in the oven for 15 – 18 minutes, turning the veggies once during the roasting process.

Meanwhile, slice the hoagie rolls in half, butter the inside generously, and place the buttered side down on a separate sheet pan.  Place the rolls in the oven when there are just a few minutes left for the salmon (12-minute mark) and toast the rolls for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.

Remove the rolls from the oven and turn over so the buttered, toasted side is facing up.  Place 2 slices of provolone cheese on the bread and place back in the oven for another minute or so until the cheese is melted.

Remove the salmon, veggies, and cheese bread from the oven.  Flake the salmon with a fork.  Place the salmon onto the cheesy bread, then top with the roasted peppers, mushrooms, and onions.

Easy peasy and delicious!

What to Serve with a Salmon Cheesesteak?

Since you have the bread, the veggies, and the protein, you have all the basic food groups covered here.  I keep it simple by serving with plain non-GMO kettle potato chips, you could also serve with a baked potato, fries, and a side salad.

To make this low carb, you would just leave out the bread.  Pile the salmon and veggies on the sheet pan after finished roasting and place the provolone cheese on top.  Place back in the heated oven for a few minutes until the cheese is melted and gooey.  Transfer to a plate and enjoy!
