Tiesta Tea Loose Leaf Tea Review

Tiesta Tea Review

Tiesta Tea – New at Safeway

If you walk down the tea aisle at your local grocery store, you’ll notice many new tea options available, including Tiesta Tea, which is a loose-leaf tea sold in colorful pouches and tins.  This hot new tea company based out of Chicago really knows their tea leaves and blends!

The new tea line offers naturally functional tea blends that not only taste great but help you with a variety of health and wellness benefits.  I received several flavors of the new Tiesta Teas to review and share my thoughts with you here.

The marketers at Tiesta Tea have cleverly labeled their teas according to five functional benefits so you can quickly determine which tea to purchase based on the benefits you want to achieve and flavor profiles.

Choose from Energizer, Immunity, Eternity, Slenderizer or Relaxer.  Perfect hot or cold, these new teas pack a potent punch when it comes to flavor and benefits.

How do you Brew Tiesta Tea Loose Leaf Teas?

Before we get into the flavor profile and functional benefits of each Tiesta Tea, let’s address how you brew loose leaf tea, because if you are new to this form of tea, you may be intimidated initially at how to get the maximum flavor of tea without a tea bag and string of which may be accustomed.  Let me put your mind at ease and tell you – it’s super easy!

There are many ways that you can brew loose leaf tea, but these 3 techniques yield a perfectly delicious cup of tea every time.  If you are a regular tea drinker, you’ll also need a tea kettle to heat your water.  I find heating water in a kettle makes my tea taste better than heating in the microwave, but don’t ask me why.

Brewing Loose Leaf Tea Using a Filter Bag:

Tiesta Teas has thought of everything,  and in the store next to the tea packages, you will find the Tiesta tea filters in a 100 ct. box that you can use to steep your loose leaf tea.  Simply open the tea filter, add 1 – 1.5 teaspoons of your favorite tea leaves, fold the pouch twice to close, and place in your mug.  Pour hot water over the tea filter and steep the tea until it is ready.  See our guide for the time to steep your tea in the review of the teas below.

Brew Loose Leaf Tea with a Fine Mesh Sieve or Mesh Ball Tea Infuser

If you don’t want to purchase the tea filters, you can use a small 3″ fine mesh sieve to hold the tea leaves.  Simply place the mesh sieve over your tea mug, add the tea leaves and pour the hot water over the sieve, so that the water is at the same level as the tea leaves, allowing them to steep in the hot water to make the tea.  The mesh ball tea infuser is also incredibly easy to use.  Simply open the infuser, add your tea leaves and place in your tea mug.  Cover the infuser with hot water and steep until tea is ready.  When you are done, open the infuser and discard the used tea leaves. This method is how I’ve always brewed my loose leaf teas until Tiesta Tea sent me their Brewmaster infuser, which I describe next.

Brew Loose Leaf Teas using Tiesta Tea Brewmaster

I received the Tiesta Tea Brewmaster along with the teas to sample, and it has since become one of my favorite gadgets in the kitchen.  I drink a lot of tea throughout the day and have found using this brewmaster infuser a time saver and I think it yields a fabulous cup of tea!  With the fine-mesh sieve and mesh ball infuser, you can still get tiny floaty tea leaf pieces left in your tea mug, but with the Brewmaster, the “filter” is so fine, you don’t get any of those little floaty bits.

To use the Brewmaster you simply scoop 1.5 teaspoons of tea leaves into the infuser.  Add your hot water and let the tea steep for 3-7 minutes, depending on the tea you are making.

Then (this is the best part), place the brewmaster over your tea mug and watch as the tea expresses through the filter into your mug.  You just have to watch to be sure you don’t overfill your mug.  If you want to try one of the Brewmasters, you can order it from the Tiesta Tea website as I don’t believe these are in retail stores yet.

Tiesta Teas – Energizer Tea Blends

The teas in red packaging are made with black and mate teas to help you deal with fatigue by giving you an added mental and physical boost.  The Energizer Teas include Passion Berry Jolt and Chai Love.  See our review of these Energizer Teas below.

The Tiesta Tea Passion Berry Jolt Tea is a raspberry passion fruit black tea with pineapple bits, cornflowers, passion fruit bits and raspberry bits in the blend.  This tea is a crisp and refreshing black tea with notes of raspberry and passion fruit.  It is not overly sweet and has the perfect amount of flavor with a good amount of caffeine to give you the extra jolt of energy to start your morning or get through the afternoon.

Brew this tea for 3-5 minutes for optimal flavor.  I love this tea iced with a touch of lemon.  I did not add any additional sweetener because it really doesn’t need it.  The fruity flavors go a long way to enhance the flavor profile of this delicious black tea.

Tiesta Teas Immunity Blends

The teas in yellow pouches help strengthen your immunity and give you a health boost.  The Immunity Blends contain fruit teas and rooibos tea which help you prevent or recover from illness by fueling your body with a variety of nutrients and vitamins.  Rooibos comes from a red bush in South Africa and is known for its high levels of vitamin C, among other health benefits.  The Immunity Teas include Maui Mango and Chocolate Ginger Turmeric flavors.

The Tiesta Tea Maui Mango tea is a Mango, Pineapple Fruit Tea, which is caffeine-free. The gorgeous bright yellow color and bright flavors of the tea come from pineapple pieces, orange slices, mango bits, safflowers, strawberry fruit granules, white hibiscus, and marigold petals.

The Maui Mango tea is best brewed for 5-7 minutes for optimal flavor.  This refreshing tea is delicious cold or warm, but my preference was over ice.  You get sweet mango notes with fresh citrus and a touch of strawberry.

The Tiesta Tea Chocolate Ginger Turmeric Tea is a spiced cocoa rooibos tea with cocoa shell, ginger, caramel pieces, turmeric, chocolate chunks, and sunflower petals.  This tea has a very strong earthy profile with cocoa and ginger flavors.  It’s the most bitter of the teas I sampled and I felt it needed a little raw sugar for just a hint of sweetness.  You can enjoy this tea hot or cold, but I preferred it hot with a little sweetener and milk to cut the bitterness.

Turmeric is a spice that has been used for thousands of years in India for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits and chocolate is a powerful antioxidant and ginger is used for helping digestion and preventing the cold and flu.  This is a nutrient-dense tea!

Tiesta Teas Eternity Blends

The Eternity teas in the blue pouches are made with white, green, and fruit teas with plenty of superfoods and antioxidants to help your body deal with the effects of aging.  The blueberry Wild Child Tea contains apple pieces, hibiscus, elderberries, pomegranate and blueberries.    This tea has no caffeine and is best brewed for 5-7 minutes.

The Blueberry Wild Child tea is one of my favorites.  I normally do not like really fruity and sweet teas, however, this tea is perfectly balanced with a strong blueberry, raspberry, and pomegranate flavor and has enough tartness to it, that it’s just slightly sweet, despite its gorgeous deep red color that might lead you to believe it’s a sweet tea.  This tea would make a fabulous cocktail – paired with rum or vodka – get the functional antioxidant benefits while you are enjoying an adult beverage!

Tiesta Teas Slenderizer Blends

The teas in the green pouches are made with green, white, and oolong teas, which are designed to help suppress your appetite.  The two flavors include Fruity Pebbles and Lean Green Machine.

The Tiesta Teas Fruity Pebbles blend is a strawberry pineapple green tea with sweet blackberry leaves, pineapple bits, papaya, rose petals and strawberry fruit granules.   Unlike its namesake, this tea is not sweet, rather it has a strong green tea flavor with mild notes of strawberry and pineapple.  This tea is delicious iced and is the perfect afternoon pick me up instead of a sweet treat!  Because it contains green tea, it has a medium level of caffeine.  It’s best brewed for 1-3 minutes.

Tiesta Teas Fruity Pebbles

The Lean Green Machine Slenderizer tea blend is my favorite of the two slenderizer teas.  It has a light citrusy green tea flavor with lemongrass, orange peel, lemon peel, and bergamot oil.  It’s the lightest tea in terms of flavor and color but the flavors are delicious and refreshing.  I’m not usually a big fan of green teas, but this one has enough other flavors that complement the green tea so that all I really taste is orange peel and lemongrass in a refreshing manner.

I will say I noticed that while drinking either of the slenderizer teas (iced in the afternoon), I was not otherwise thinking about food, so maybe there is something to the functional benefits that will lead to weight loss.

Tiesta Teas Relaxer Blends

The teas in the purple pouches are caffeine-free and made with a unique blend of herbs to help relax your body and mind.  The Relaxer Blends include Cocoa Mint Chill and Lavender Chamomile.

The Cocoa Mint Chill Tea is a delicious and refreshing chocolate peppermint herbal tea.  I was nervous after tasting the chocolate ginger turmeric blend that the cocoa would overpower the mint in this tea, but that is totally not the case.  If you like peppermint tea, you will love the Cocoa Mint Chill tea.  Delicious hot or cold, this rooibos tea has peppermint, cocoa shell, chocolate chips and cornflowers.  The flavor profile is definitely a peppermint rooibos tea with faint notes of cocoa.

The cocoa is there for a mild flavor additive but I believe it’s mostly present for the functional benefits as flavonoids in cocoa have been linked to reducing blood pressure, and improving cholesterol.

Cocoa Mint Chill Tiesta Tea

The Tiesta Tea Lavender Chamomile Tea is a soft chamomile herbal tea.  This is not your traditional chamomile tea, in fact it’s better!  This chamomile blend contains lavender, blue mallow blossoms and lemongrass.  I will say I was surprised by the lemongrass because I was expecting a mild chamomile tea, but the addition of the lemongrass and lavender give this tea a well-balanced flavor profile.  The chamomile flowers still dominate the flavor, but I love the functional benefit of the lavender (helps you sleep) and the subtle flavor of lemon from the lemongrass.

Chamomile was the first tea I ever consumed, with fresh chamomile flowers from my Greek Grandmother’s land, brought over by my parents when they immigrated to the states, so I have a deep appreciation for the flavor and health benefits of chamomile.

To this day, I have my own stash of chamomile flowers that I use to make tea for my kiddos anytime they have a tummy ache or trouble sleeping.  Now I can get the chamomile flowers in a Tiesta Tea package at my local grocery store!
