Open Nature Non-Dairy Ice Cream

Ice cream lovers rejoice – there is a new Open Nature Non-Dairy ice cream line at Safeway.  This new ice cream is available in 7 flavors, each made with either almond milk or cashew milk.  I have always been a big fan of the Open Nature Gelatos and Sorbets, so this is a great addition to the line.  I picked up the Salted Caramel Cluster ice cream made with cashew milk to try and it was really good!   It has chunks of cashews, dark chocolate and swirls of salted caramel throughout.  I could tell there was no “cream” from the texture, but I could not taste the difference.  This is the perfect dessert option if you are unable to consume dairy, but you still want ice cream!

There has been a huge shake up in the ice cream category as of late.  Just walk down the frozen aisle at your local Safeway and you’ll see new ice cream brands with pints, and new frozen novelties that delight the senses.  Open Nature also has a new Scandal-less line of low fat ice creams that we will tell you all about tomorrow.

Here’s the thing about non-dairy and low fat ice creams – because they don’t actually have any cream, they don’t scoop in nice round scoops like traditional ice cream.   I know that’s totally a first world problem, so I guess the solution is to eat it straight from the container, all to myself!

  1. I can’t believe it. The cookie dough ice cream had not a single piece of cookie dough in the entire container. There were maybe 3 chocolate chips. Can I please get a refund???

  2. My son is allergic to dairy ever since he was born, so we have tried a plethora of ice cream (non-dairy frozen dessert) for years! He usually eats SO Delicious but they didn’t have any and I bought this the Almondmilk Chocolate Fudge Brownie (like chocolate Ice cream) and the Cashewmilk Vanilla. My son really likes the Chocolate one, he said it takes like really good chocolate! But he didn’t like the vanilla, I’m guessing it has to do with the kind of base “milk” that is used. Cashewmilk has a stronger flavor than coconut or almond and I think that is where the tastes become undesirable for some. I will look around to see if they have bigger sizes of the Almondmilk chocolate fudge brownie. But I’m super excited that now my son has a variety to choose from. Thank you Open Nature!!

    1. Fantastic! Thank you for letting us know about your experience! So glad he likes the chocolate. There are many flavors from which to choose.

  3. We bought the Vanilla Open Nature Ice cream and all I can say about is….yuk! It was really awful and definitely didn’t taste like vanilla. Even our dog wouldn’t eat. Only ate a teaspoon full….even with chocolate topping on it…tasted really bad.

  4. we tried the open nature chocolate peanut butter and chocolate chip. They, especially the peanut butter were wonderful. The problem is that we no longer get coupons for open nature products even though we shop at both Safeway and Albertsons on a weekly basis.

  5. Worst ice cream ever. Texture is god awful. I got so grossed out by it I had to toss it out. 5$ wasted. Save your money as there are so many better options out there.

  6. The cookie dough flavor is awful—no pieces of cookie dough and the ice cream has a terrible texture and an overly sweet cinnamon flavor. I threw it out.
Ben & Jerry’s, Haagen-Dazs, and So Delicious make amazing non-dairy ice cream, so I will definitely be sticking with those brands.
In terms of your statement that non-dairy ice cream doesn’t scoop like dairy ice cream—-probably you are scooping when it is too frozen to scoop. Just let it sit out for a few minutes, and it will be easy to scoop.

  7. This my 1st time trying this brand of ice cream. I’m dairy sensitive? & I love ice cream. I had been looking for dairy free ice cream I had other ones too. This one I really like too I had the banana & walnuts it’s incredible. It has big chunks of chocolate & walnuts is delicious!.?? I’m very happy to had found another ice cream that I can eat with. I make banana smoothies & I add a few spoons of ice cream is very delicious!

  8. This is a disgrace to cookie dough Ice cream. You can’t leave our cookie dough and expect to say it’s cookie dough ice cream. Let’s be honest, this is a rip off and a huge let down.
