Review of Beyond Burgers, New Plant Based Burger Patties

Plant Based Burger Review

A Review of Plant Based Burgers – Beyond Burgers

There is a new soy free, gluten free, GMO free plant-based burger on the market from Beyond Meat called The Beyond Burger and it is available at Safeway.  The new Beyond Burgers are made with all plant-based ingredients like pea protein, coconut oil, potato starch, and beet juice.  There are 20 grams of protein in each burger patty as well.  If you are looking to reduce the amount of meat in your diet, and looking for a protein alternative, this could be a perfect option for you.

I spent 20 years as a vegetarian, so I’ve tried every veggie burger on the market, and these burgers are unique in that they are not filled with soy and veggies like other “veggie burgers” rather they are made with pea protein and coconut oil.  These burgers can be found in the meat case which also sets it apart from the competition.  The makers of the Beyond Meat products are trying to go after the traditional meat eaters to really promote the fact that you don’t need animal protein to have a burger, and that plant-based proteins are just as good.

Beyond Burger Reviews

Beyond Burgers Review

I was given a package of Beyond Burgers to review and I made these 2 ways – one as a traditional burger with a bun, cheese, ketchup and mustard and then I also ate these on a pita bread topped with tzaziki sauce and a Greek salad.   I made each burger in a non-stick skillet on the stove and it sizzled and even smelled like a real burger and released juices while it cooked.

In the package, the burgers are slightly red, from the beat juice, but once cooked, the burgers turn brown like a traditional cooked burger.  The burger tasted really good.  It was juicy and full of flavor and you really didn’t miss the “meat”.  What I like most about them is that they have no soy, or genetically modified ingredients and they have 20 grams of protein!

My biggest “beef” with the burgers is that they don’t have a long “shelf” life and since they were previously frozen, they shouldn’t be refrozen.  As long as you are good about meal planning, and eat these before their best buy date, you won’t have any issues.

They are also higher in fat than other plant-based burgers on the market, but that is because of the coconut oil.  But, coconut oil is high in antioxidants and is known to raise HDL, the “good” cholesterol, especially when replacing carbohydrates in the diet. This may be due to its high content of a fatty acid known as lauric acid, according to Shape magazine.

If eating more plant-based protein and feeling good about animal welfare and sustainability are important to you, you should give these burgers a try.   Check out 15 plant-based recipes you can try to incorporate more plant-based foods into your diet. Beyond Meat Products

The Beyond Burgers are not the only product from Beyond Meat available at Safeway.  They also carry the Beyond Meat Crumbles, which can be used as an alternative to ground beef, and the Beyond Chicken strips which can be used as an alternative to chicken.  The company does have other plant-based meat products including Beyond Sausage and  I expect it’s just a matter of time before the whole line makes an appearance in Safeway stores.
