Beef & Beer Shepherd’s Pie Recipe
Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with this Irish twist on Shepherd’s Pie. The beer-braised beef is prepared with onion, celery and carrots, then topped with cheesy mashed potatoes for a casserole that’s guaranteed to get your St. Patty’s celebration (sham)rocking.
Take advantage of sales on ground beef and potatoes and use frozen green beans you may already have on hand to make this delicious Shepherd’s Pie recipe. It’s a delicious option for eating in and a perfect way to feed your family. Meat, veggies and potatoes in one pan! Yes, please!
While fresh is best, you can always use potato flakes from the pantry for the mashed potatoes or prepared potatoes from the deli and see if anyone notices the difference.
Ingredients Needed for Shepherd’s Pie
- 1 cup diced yellow onion
- 1/2 cup diced carrots
- 1/2 cup diced celery
- 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 pound 85/15 ground beef
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 3 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 3/4 cup stout beer
- 2 cups frozen green beans, thawed and thoroughly drained
- 3 cups prepared mashed potatoes, heated through
- 1 ½ cups white cheddar cheese, divided
How to Make Shepherd’s Pie
Step 1
Preheat oven to 375°. Spray a 12-inch sauté pan with non-stick cooking spray. Heat pan on the stovetop over medium heat. Add onion, carrots, celery, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Sauce for 3-4 minutes until onions begin to soften and turn translucent. Add garlic and cook an additional minute.
Step 2
Increase heat to medium-high and add ground beef remaining salt and pepper. Cook for 5-6 minutes until beef is no longer pink. Add tomato paste and stir for one minute. Stir in Worcestershire sauce and beer. Reduce heat to medium-low and let simmer 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

- Remove pan from heat. Place green beans over mixture in a single layer. Stir 1/2 cup cheese into potatoes and gently spread potatoes over green beans. Top with remaining cheese. Place pan in the oven for 30-35 minutes until cheese is melted. Serve.
