French toast makes a frequent appearance at breakfast.  The kids get tired of cereal, egg, and oatmeal so I try to mix it up by making them some French toast.

I decided to put my homemade apple butter to use and make apple butter French toast and the result was a deliciously sweet French toast that it was gobbled up in minutes!  I topped the French toast with caramelized cinnamon apples that were so full of flavor without any sugar, it’s the perfect fall breakfast option!

Take advantage of the sale on Honeycrisp apples and eggs at Safeway to make some Apple French Toast for your family this week.

How to Make Apple Butter French Toast

French toast is one of the easiest recipes you can make at home.  It starts with a custard that is made of milk and eggs.  I used almond milk, so my French toast was dairy-free – but any milk or cream you have on hand will work.

Make the custard in a medium bowl by whisking the egg, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and apple butter.

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the skillet.

Dip the bread into the custard, saturating both sides, then place the bread into the hot skillet.  Cook the French toast for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and toasted.

In a separate skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the diced apples.  Top with ground cinnamon and stir to coat.   Cook the apples for about 5 minutes until golden and caramelized.

Plate the French Toast, then top with a dollop of apple butter and the caramelized apples.

Garnish with powdered sugar if desired.
