Monte Cristo Casserole

The perfect make-ahead brunch meal this Monte Cristo Casserole combines the best of ham, cheese, and French toast in one delicious casserole that can be assembled overnight and baked in the morning.

Whether you’re serving up a lazy Sunday brunch or a holiday breakfast for a crowd, this Monte Cristo Overnight Bake is filling and easy. Prep the dish the evening before and refrigerate overnight, then bake in the morning. Serve with fruit and enjoy!

A Monte Cristo is traditionally made with ham and cheese sandwiched between two thick slices of bread, dipped in an egg and milk custard and pan-fried in butter to golden perfection.

I would live for Bennigans Monte Cristo Sandwiches after church on Sundays as a kid – they were the highlight of my week!  My brother worked there and always managed to bring some home for us.

It’s traditionally topped with a dusting of powdered sugar and served with raspberry preserves.  Dipping a Monte Cristo in the raspberry jam is an epic sweet and savory flavor bomb!

This Monte Cristo Casserole combines all of that delicious goodness in a healthier casserole that you can make ahead and serve for brunch.  Assemble the casserole the night before and let the flavors soak overnight and bake it off in the morning for a perfect treat for Easter, a weekend brunch and Mother’s Day!

Ingredients in Monte Cristo Casserole

  • milk – you can use plant-based milk to make it dairy-free.  The milk is needed to make the custard. Almond milk or oat milk would be great here.
  • eggs – the base of the custard is milk and eggs, similar to a French toast casserole.
  • thick slices of white bread (challah or brioche) – you can buy brioche bread pre-sliced at the bakery, or slice a fresh loaf of challah bread from the Safeway bakery.
  • sliced ham – thin slices of ham are nestled with sliced turkey between the layers.   We love the slight sweetness that a honey ham gives in this recipe.
  • sliced turkey – paired with the sliced ham, turkey slices add a nice protein to the casserole.
  • Gruyere cheese – freshly grated Gruyere cheese or swiss cheese binds the casserole and adds a great flavor and texture to the dish.

Optional Toppings

  • powdered sugar
  • raspberry preserves
  • fresh raspberries
