Smoked Salmon Salad
Smoked Salmon Salad is a wonderful way to mix up your lunch or dinner options. Similar to tuna salad, but using hot smoked salmon instead, this smoked salmon salad can be served as a sandwich, in a crunchy cucumber boat, or over greens and with tomatoes and avocado in a salad. It’s delicious and super easy to prepare.
Safeway carries hot smoked salmon under the Waterfront BISTRO brand in the seafood department in several varieties. They have farm-raised smoked salmon in original and peppered flavors and wild sockeye smoked salmon in two flavor options as well.
Pick up the farmed hot smoked salmon on sale for $2.49 this week (regularly priced at $5.99) and make this delicious smoked salmon salad. See below for three ways to serve the smoked salmon salad.
What is Hot Smoked Salmon vs. Cold Smoked Salmon
Hot smoked salmon is salmon that is smoked at a high temperature.
Cold smoked salmon, otherwise known as lox or gravlax, is cured using herbs, salt and sugar, and seasonings in a cold environment, resulting in a silky textured salmon that can be thinly sliced.
Ingredients in Smoked Salmon
- 4 oz Waterfront BISTRO Hot Smoked Salmon
- 1/2 tablespoon mayo
- 1/2 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon red onion, finely diced
- 1 tablespoon celery, finely diced
- 1 tablespoon fresh dill, minced
- 1 teaspoon capers
- 1 lemon, zest, and juice
- freshly cracked black pepper
How to Make Smoked Salmon Salad
Remove the smoked salmon from the package and flake the salmon with a fork, careful not to flake the skin. Place the salmon flesh in a bowl, leaving the skin behind to be discarded.
To the bowl, add the mayo, Dijon mustard, red onion, celery, dill, capers, lemon zest, and juice of half a lemon. Mix together with a fork until combined.
For best flavor, refrigerate to allow the flavors to meld together, but I can never take the time to do this and I eat it straight from the bowl.
Serve over a green salad, over toasted whole-grain or sourdough bread, on avocado toast, in cucumber boats, or with whole-grain crackers or parmesan crisps for a low carb option.
How to Serve Hot Smoked Salmon Salad
Here are three ways to serve the smoked salmon salad. I love all three equally and they all have a place in my kitchen.
Cucumber Smoked Salmon Boats
For this preparation, you will need Persian cucumbers or English cucumbers. Slice the cucumber in half and use a spoon to hollow out the cucumber by removing the seeds. Fill with the smoked salmon and enjoy.
This preparation is low carb and keto-friendy, while also being Mediterranean diet-friendly.
Avocado Toast with Smoked Salmon
Toast a slice of whole-grain or sourdough bread. Add half of an avocado and smash it onto the bread. Top with salt and pepper and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Top with the smoked salmon salad and some micro-greens or sprouts.
This preparation provides fiber from the whole-grain toast, so it’s Mediterranean diet-friendly.
Smoked Salmon Salad over Greens
Fill a bowl with your favorite greens – I used arugula. Top with slices of cucumber, cherry tomato halves, diced avocado, and the smoked salmon salad. Drizzle with lemon avocado oil or with extra virgin olive oil and a squeeze of lemon and top with freshly cracked black pepper for a simple dressing.
This preparation is low carb and keto-friendly, and also being Mediterranean diet-friendly.

1 thought on “Smoked Salmon Salad – 3 Ways”
I was skeptical about the flavors and I thought it would be too salty with the capers, but this was amazing! The lemon mellowed everything out. I served over the hollowed-out cucumber boats. My kids loved it too. A great price on the smoked salmon and a great recipe that will be on repeat!
