Grapes and Cheese Panini With Arugula

Grape and Cheese Panini

Grapes and cheese have a long pairing history for charcuterie boards, wine tasting events, and more.  It’s only natural that when paired in a grilled cheese sandwich that the two complement each other perfectly.

Take your grilled cheese to the next level with a gourmet grape and cheese sandwich with spicy arugula.    It is a fabulous recipe to use up grapes and a budget-friendly way to feed your family when grapes are on sale.

I love to use hearty sourdough bread, but a whole grain or rye bread would be fantastic here as well.  I like the Izzio brand of Everything Sourdough that is available in the Safeway bakery.

It adds another dimension of flavor through the everything seed coating on the bread.

This recipe is similar to the grape and brie grilled flatbread we’ve shared on the blog before – but rather than flatbread, we are making it into a sandwich.

Take advantage of sales on fresh grapes, arugula and cheese to make this sandwich for lunch, dinner, or to pack for a picnic as you listen to live music in a park.

How to Make a Grape and Cheese Panini?

If you have a panini press, it definitely makes the job easier, but if you do not, it’s ok – you can make a panini in a grill pan, or you can make a toasted (or grilled) grape and cheese sandwich.

Heat the panini press or the grill pan or skillet over medium heat.

Start by buttering each slice of bread on one side.

Slice the grapes in half.

Lay the bread buttered side down in the panini press or the skillet and place a slice of cheese on the bread.  Top with the sliced grapes and the arugula.  Place the top bread, buttered side up on top of the arugula.  Close the panini press and let the sandwich cook for about 3-4 minutes until golden brown and the cheese is melted.

If using a skillet or grill pan, place a 2nd pan or skillet on top of the sandwich to press it down slightly.  Cook for 4 minutes, then remove the skillet and carefully flip the sandwich using a spatula.

The result is tender roasted grapes with melted cheese and spicy arugula.  A match made in panini heaven!
